Villa Bengawan is a little sanctuary stretching from Pererenan’s “millionaire’s row” to the jungle-clad river that flows to the beach. Low buildings topped by grey wood shingle roofs lie in terraces and step gently down from the entrance of the villa into the lush tropical garden. During the day, tiny hummingbirds flit between trees and vibrant birdsong fills the balmy air as these hidden creatures soak up the serenity of Bengawan’s exotic gardens. At night, the frogs – drawn to the villa’s pink-and white-spiked lily and lily ponds – take up their positions as croaking bassists in this lively natural orchestra.
